A Cohesive Architect & Interior Designer Studio
Established in 2017 by interior designer Emily Reilly and architect Joe Reilly. After 10 years in London – Joe studying architecture at the Bartlett UCL before working at architecture practice Alma-nac, and Emily working at the Victoria and Albert Museum - they set sail to Cornwall, where COAL was born.
Our Approach
We take a cohesive approach to architecture, interior design and landscape. Telling the story of our clients and the surrounding landscape, each project takes us on a unique journey from conception to completion.
Our interest lies in the history of design, and we work across many different architectural styles; it is the dialogue between old and new that underpins our work. We will always look to maintain the history of a place, preserving texture and patina, in preparation for its new lease of life.
Our Work
The way we work is a process of collective making - we are lucky to collaborate with some fantastic craftspeople, particularly in Cornwall.
Our projects strive to create low-energy homes, made of natural materials and furnished with colour, handcrafted treasures and timeless antiques. We believe good design ages well.
Emily Reilly | Interior Designer
Interior Designer & Co-Founder
Emily looks after COAL interiors. Her work is inspired by the natural hues and textures of the Cornish landscape. For each project, she sources antique and bespoke furnishings to make truly unique homes which reflect the lives of her clients.
Emily broadened her design vocabulary through a BA in History of Art (First Class, Hons) at UCL. She went on to work in the V&A publishing department for 5 years, which fuelled her passion for art and design further. Surrounded by the museum’s collection of textiles, art and furniture provided endless references.
A natural path then led her to retrain in Interior Design at Central Saint Martins and eventually down to Cornwall.
